Feeding the children of Matshwi
As the pandemic shut down schools across South Africa, five women in the community of Matshwi came together to begin providing food and meals for children in their village. This group of children was experiencing food insecurity due to the loss of school meals as well as family members losing employment.
Thushanang Children’s Foundation was established on April 17, 2020 as a means for the women to continue this project. The project was originally funded from their own pockets. When they ran out of money they attempted to raise money but struggled to find a steady steam that would ensure the meals would continue.
In May of 2020 the group reached out to a former Peace Corps Volunteer who had lived in the village over a decade earlier. Together they began raising money to ensure that the children would continue to receive regular meals.
Four years later this partnership of women that spans the globe ensures that the children of Matshwi has their basic needs met and can instead focus on the joys of childhood.
Food Packets
Food packets are designed to provide children experiencing food insecurity with nutritious free food that can be cooked at their homes and shared with their families.
Meals
Children are regularly served hot meals to ensure they aren’t going hungry
Joy
Food security allows the children to focus on being kids and have joyful experiences.
“This project has changed the lives of children who are less privileged in our community. It has restored their hope by knowing there is food provided for them.”
— Mapula Makgoba, Thushanang volunteer
